FLIGHT SIMULATOR TEST

GREAT PLANES REALFLIGHT G3.5
The G3 RealFlight flight simulator has been around long
enough for everyone to know about its great features and
how realistic it feels. Once we all started flying the G3, it was
hard to think of ways to make it better. With a continual
supply of aircraft and airport upgrades, the G3 RealFlight
sim has always been kept up-to-date. To make it even
better, the clever programmers at RealFlight HQ have
definitely kicked it up a notch, and the new G3.5 version is
here with many great extras found nowhere else.
The shortlist of new features includes:
• Night flying
• 4D aircraft flying! (using variable/ reversible-pitch props)
• Aircraft torque-roll training
• Helicopter orientation training
• Wingtip streamers
• Responsive objects

With version G3.5, there are now more than 50 G3 aircraft to
fly! The new G3.5 models include:
• ElectriFly FlatOuts Extra 300S with variable-pitch-prop
system
• FlyZone SkyFly EP RTF
• FlyZone Cessna 182 EP RTF
• HeliMax Axe EZ
• HeliMax Axe CP
• Hobbico ElectriStar EP RTF trainer

COOLEST FEATURES
There are four new 3D flying sites: Air Race, Night Flight
School, Night Obstacle Course and Night Carnival. The three
new PhotoField flying fields are Waco Field, the home of the
Futaba/XFC event, Night Grassy Flatlands and Alpine
Meadows.

In Night Flying mode, your model has neon rope lights, and
you fly it in a twilight landscape that features a variety of
carnival rides and attractions, including a Ferris wheel, a
rollercoaster, a haunted house and a ring toss. This feature
is also available for certain helicopters.

Flying an aerobatic foamie with a reversible-pitch prop just
got a lot safer and cheaper. The program’s physics engine
now has 4D flight capabilities that include variable-pitch-prop
power systems. No more crashes and repairs when learning
inverted hovers!

The Multiplayer mode lets two pilots to fly simultaneously
using an Internet hookup and allows midair crashes in true
RC combat fashion! Multiplayer mode allows you to fly with
another pilot on the same PC; you each control your own
aircraft. This feature is ideal for giving one-on-one flight
instruction, for practicing formation flying and for crashing
into each other!

And talking about crashes, a new special effect kicks up dust
when a plane lands on dirt, creates balsa "chaff" as a model
breaks apart and even causes leaves to shake and fall if an
aircraft flies into a tree.

ADDED REALISM
Added realism comes with the enhanced interaction with
other objects. If you hit a limbo bar, it will fall off its supports,
and if you hit a barrel, it will roll along the ground. Sound
effects, too, have been enhanced. Flying over certain
objects below, you hear the appropriate sounds—cows
mooing and a tractor’s diesel engine, for example.

FLY WITH YOUR OWN RADIO
You can use your RC transmitter to control RealFlight G3.5.
Connect it to the InterLink Plus controller with a buddy-box
cable (G3.5 includes several adapter cables), connect your
transmitter to the InterLink Plus controller, and follow the
instructions for a quick setup procedure. Set your transmitter
in FM or PPM mode, click the Controller menu and then
highlight the Select Controller menu item. Select the
InterLink Transmitter X channel option, and follow the
prompts

One of my favorites is the
slope-soaring site. You can really get
these sleek sailplanes moving and
almost feel the wind.
The Wingtip Ribbons mode is a slick
trick. Ribbons trail behind the model
and can be used as a visual aid.
How about helicopters at night at a
carnival? You can control the sun’s
position and make several of the 3D
sites daytime or nighttime—interesting
experience, for sure.
To practice 3D maneuvers such as
hovering, you select one of several
training modes that position your
model in a large practice circle. Use all
of the controls, or select only a few.
SPECIAL FLIGHT SCHOOL
There are two new flight-training features— one for aircraft
torque-roll training and the other for helicopter-orientation
training. Airplane pilots can master "hanging" a Yak 54 in
midair! The sim sets you up with a vertical guide reference
line and a choice of a small, medium, or large circular
training area. Fly out of the area, and it’s as if your plane
has hit an invisible wall; it breaks apart and falls to the
ground. You can also assign control to a single function or to
multiple functions; for example, you can work only the rudder
or just the ailerons or only the elevator and have the
computer handle the rest. After you’ve mastered a control,
you can move on to the next until you are in total control of
all three axes. You can also choose left, right, top, or bottom
views as you practice.

Heli pilots can also select how many controls they learn, and
a "ghost" helicopter acts as a visual aid. As your skills
improve, you can increase the number of controls. These
training aids will definitely shorten you training time on a real
RC heli.

Priced at $199.90, RealFlight 3.5 is a great flight sim that
offers impressive features and great performance. It "feels"
right on and the virtual experience is amazingly true to life.
